Self-Study

Today i look at the academic vocabulary from the website below:

http://elc.polyu.edu.hk/CiLL/eap/wordlists.htm and these following are some :

Analyze - break down into components or essential features

Ex.: Project includes a litter survey to analyze the amounts, type and materials.

Assume – to accept something to be true without question or proof.

Ex.: We can’t assume the suspects to be guilty simply because they have decided to remain silent.

Authority - the power or right to give orders or make decisions

Ex.: He has the authority to issue warrants.

Available - convenient for use or disposal

Ex.: The house is available after July 1.

Derive – obtain

Ex.: The institute derives all its money from foreign investments.

Economy - the system of production and distribution and consumption

Ex.: Tourism contributes millions of pounds to the country’s economy.

Identify – to recognize someone or something and prove who or what they are

Ex.: Even the smallest baby can identify its mother by her voice.

Interpret – to decide what the intended meaning of something is

Ex.: It is difficult to interpret these statistics without knowing how they were obtained.

Involve – to include someone or something in something

Ex.: The second accident involved two cars and a lorry.

Proceed - continue a certain state, condition, or activity

Ex.: The lawyer has decided not to proceed with the case.

Process – a series of actions that you take in order to achieve a result

Ex.: This decision may delay the process of European unification.

Significant – important or noticeable

Ex.: There has been a significant increase in the number of women students in recent year.
